Jonathan launches new tourism identity

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has launched “Fascinating Nigeria,” a new tourism identity intended to lure international tourists and boost the economy of the country.

Performing the ceremony at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Thursday night, he stressed the importance of travel and tourism to a nation’s economy as it accounts for over $6millionof global economy.

Represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Jonathan observed the 2013 Economic Impact Report of the World Travel and Tourism Council which indicated that the sector has created over 200 million jobs which represents 8.7 per cent globally.

Jonathan directed the Ministry of Trade and Investment to work with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation to develop sector-specific mechanisms that would stimulate and sustain investments in the sector.

He also pledged to develop the National Theatre in Lagos as a duty-free entertainment centre and encouraged greater collaboration with the private sector in upgrading other cultural centres in the short and medium term basis. He said government is committed to complete the National Cultural Centre, Abuja also known as ‘The Millennium Towers.[Nigerian Tribune]
